EU CBD and Cannabis Markets: A Miscellany of Regulation

With the increasing popularity of Cannabis products, there is noted a tremendous growth in such products in Europe. In the past few years, EU CBD and Cannabis markets have experienced several regulations and constant growth in the consumption of such products has increased among consumers. Today, regulators taking a close look to the market to ensure that big cannabis companies abide by the regulation. Along with so many regulations and prohibitions, this market is constantly growing across the world.

As per a study, a large number of adults in Europe use CBD products and the rate of their consumption are increasing each year. Along with regulation, growing awareness for the use of CBD across Europe is helping people to stay away or lower the consumption of cannabinoid. Therefore, these regulations have largely impacted both domestic and international CBD market. In countries like the Netherlands, UK, and France, harvesting of hemp leaves and flowers is prohibited as they contain cannabidiol. Today such countries have experienced lower use of CBD and improved awareness among the users.

Despite such regulations, there is noted a boost in the cultivation of CBD in European countries. However, countries where strict regulations prevent extracting CBD from hemp, CBD is imported from other European countries. In order to limit and regulate the production of CBD, the specific limit is set and as per regulation, the extraction should not exceed the THC limit of 0.2%. However, the set limit is not the same in all the countries, as Austria and Switzerland permit higher of 1.0% of THC limit.

As per experts, the regulation may be confusing in the UK as it permits 1mg of THC per container no matter how big the container is. On the other hand, THC presence should be 0% for a product to be legal. The regulation also makes it compulsory that CDB products should be licensed to be sold in the market. Therefore, the regulators and competent authorities in Europe keeps a constant closer look at the CBD products in the market and ensure they are sold as per the set guidelines. However, enforcement actions are taken against companies that sell CBD products over the set line.
