Aside from THC and CBD, Other Cannabinoids and Their Potential Uses
The chemical compound by the name cannabinoid can act on the cannabinoid
receptors to alter the release of certain neurotransmitters in the brain. The
cannabinoid receptors are included in the endocannabinoid system of the human
body and are located throughout it. These receptors may be involved in a range
of physiological processes like pain sensation, memory, and mood among others.
Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the two important
cannabinoids that are found in cannabis (marijuana). But if we take into
account all the research conducted on the cannabis plant so far, more than 113
different kinds of cannabinoids have been obtained. These chemicals may have
different effects on human health as well, some of which can be therapeutic and
beneficial for the treatment. Below are some other
cannabinoids apart from CBD and THC, and their potential uses.
Cannabigerol (CBG) - During the growth of the cannabis plant, most of the Cannabigerol or
CBG is converted into CBD and THC, and only around 1% of it remains. Because
the chemical can reduce pressure in the intraocular region of the body, it can
be helpful towards the treatment of glaucoma. The chemical has also got the
potential to be used in the treatment of cancer (by blocking the receptors),
Huntington's disease and inflammatory bowel disease.
Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) - Some varieties of cannabis grown in regions including India, China,
Afghanistan, and in Western and Southern Africa may have elevated levels of the
propyl cannabinoids like THCV. The appetite suppressant can be used for
treating conditions including obesity. Tetrahydrocannabivarin may also have
benefits for bone growth, treatment of Alzheimer's disease, regulation of blood
sugar, and treatment of anxiety among others.
Cannabichromene (CBC) - CBC resembles the other kinds of natural cannabinoids including THC and
CBD. It may not be psychoactive, but it does have therapeutic value. The
cannabinoid can interact synergistically with other cannabinoids and enhance
their effects so that greater therapeutic value and benefits are achieved.
Cannabidivarin (CBDV) - The cannabinoid Cannabidivarin or CBDV is non-psychoactive and
resembles CBD in its structure closely, only being short by 2 methylene units.
The compound has been used for the treatment of epilepsy and is an FDA approved
the drug. The drug is being researched for its benefits of treating autism as
well.
Cannabis is a complex plant. While its psychoactive constituents can
cause conditions like Euphoria, others like CBD have the greatest of
therapeutic benefits and uses and are nonpsychoactive as well.
